Sri Lanka is a home to diverse faunal groups, in which the highest being birds, among land vertebrates. A total of over 450 species, which includes 34 endemics and about 220 migratory species are found in the island. Endemic species include elusive Sri Lanka Whistling-thrush, Sri Lanka Thrush, Serendib Scops-owl, Green- billed Coucal and extremely shy Sri Lanka Spurfowl.

Mammals of Sri Lanka range from smallest Pygmy Shrew to the largest land mammal the elephant, which represents in Sri Lanka as an endemic sub species, and to largest creature ever to live on earth the Blue Whale. Other mammals include the elusive Leopard, Sloth Bear, Small Cats, Civet Cats Rodents and Bats. The marine mammals of Sri Lanka is an emerging tourist attraction specially the Blue Whale. Sri Lanka is inhabited by 248 species of butterflies of which 31 are endemic to the Blue Admiralisland. Having a rich number of nectaring and larval food plants in all the climatic zones a diverse Butterfly fauna is observed.

Reptiles, the beautiful creepy crawlers add more colours to the diverse fauna in Sri Lanka. The country’s reptile fauna includes snakes, geckoes, skinks, lizards, crocodiles, terrapins, tortoise and marine turtles.

The Ichthyofauna in Sri Lanka includes both freshwater and marine fish species as well as large number of other aquatic-life.>

The Amphibian fauna in Sri Lanka is in fourth place in the world, being 140 species in an island of an area of 65610 sq.km, where 90% is endemic to the island.
